The Paint Line is a new 274,000 square foot building at SDI Columbus for a new paint line used for painting steel coils. The building consists of two crane runway aisles including a steel coil storage and shipping bay, paint line, super clean paint line, two coil looping towers, paint storage area, electrical rooms and wastewater area. CSD Structural Engineers was hired by SDI to perform the structural engineering for the building structure (including crane runway design), building foundations, and machinery foundations. CSD utilized 3D modeling for all aspects of the complete design of this project. One of the benefits is it allowed CSD to provide preliminary construction quantities to the client. This allowed the client to procure materials faster and help them meet their construction schedule. Examples of preliminary construction quantities provided included:
- Structural steel sizes, lengths and tonnage to be used in the building structure.
- Concrete volumes for large and complicated machinery foundations and the building foundations.
- Concrete reinforcing tonnage for machinery foundations and building foundations.
CSD also modeled intricate ductwork in 3D provided by a separate design firm to check for interference with the process platforms and the building structure designed by CSD. CSD provided solutions to eliminate any detected clashes before they became an issue in the field.
